If you signed up to participate in the Hot Chocolate 15K & 5K in Nashville, there are a few things you can do to successfully prepare for the big day. Whether you’re a novice runner or an experienced marathon competitor, below are a few tips to maximize your efforts on the day of the big race.

Get Some Sleep Two Nights Before

Running a marathon can be exciting and nerve-wracking, so it’s important to get plenty of rest at least two days prior to the race. Pre-race jitters have the tendency to strike the night before the big race, which can have a negative effect on your quality of sleep and overall marathon performance. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the two nights leading up to the Hot Chocolate Marathon so you are well-rested to run your best.

Keep Your Training Light

During race week, your training mileage should decrease so as not to burn yourself out. At this point in your training regimen, you should focus on getting enough rest so your legs are ready for the big race. During the week of your race, try to schedule two or three short runs. Two days out from the marathon, make sure to take a day of rest.

Get There Early

The morning of the Nashville Hot Chocolate marathon, give yourself plenty of time to get to the race site and warm up. You’ll need to figure out a variety of things, including parking, packet pick-up and warming your body up before the race begins. Try to arrive at the race site at least 60 minutes prior to start time so you have plenty of time to get to the starting line.

Get IV Hydration Therapy

If you haven’t been able to hydrate as much as you’d like before the race, consider stopping by Vida-Flo for one of our IV hydration therapy treatments. While there are several supplements and sports drinks out there that promise improved athletic performance, IV hydration therapy is a surefire way to increase the length and productivity of your workout. We work with marathon runners before every Nashville marathon to ensure they are completely hydrated and energized for the race.

Eat A Good Breakfast

On the morning of the big race, be sure to eat a healthy breakfast. Try aiming to eat about two hours prior to the race to ensure your body has plenty of time to digest your breakfast, otherwise you could run the risk of getting a cramp halfway through. Keep your meal simple and make sure you’re eating items that are high energy and easy to digest. A bowl of oatmeal with dried fruit is a great option, or a bagel with peanut butter will do the trick.

At Vida-Flo in Nashville, we’re proud to be a leading provider of IV hydration therapy for athletes and marathon runners. When you visit our facility, we’ll take the time to learn about your fitness goals before recommending the best hydration therapy treatment for you.

We all know it’s important to drink enough water during the day, but have you ever wondered why? Hydration is key to many of our bodily functions, and it’s important to consume enough water every day to help your body operate at its optimum level. At Vida-Flo Breckenridge, we’re dedicated to giving you ways to keep your body hydrated and experience the incredible benefits of hydration therapy! Make an appointment with us today!

If you find yourself struggling to keep up at work or stay interested in that new book you’ve been wanting to read, try sipping some water. Several studies have proven that people who drink enough water during the day are more present and can perform cognitive tasks faster and with more accuracy than those who were dehydrated. In day-to-day life, being able to respond quickly to coworkers or family members is vital, and if you’re dragging due to not consuming enough water, dehydration can make for a long day.

Your body is made up of more than two-thirds water, so if you’re dehydrated, your body is definitely struggling. Water helps your body to regulate temperature, maintain blood volume, lubricate the linings of your internal organs, and balance your kidney function. Without it, your body will struggle to keep all of your functions operating correctly, and dehydration can even contribute to joint pain, muscle aches, stomach and digestion issues, and headaches.

Feeling a little cranky or irritated? Can you remember the last time you drank a glass of water? If you’re struggling to recall your last H2O consumption and you don’t understand why you’re annoyed, then you’ve discovered the culprit. Studies have proven that individuals who consume enough water regularly experience less bewilderment, confusion, fatigue, and sleepiness. Those who reduced their daily intake found themselves to be less content, calm, and relaxed, and also that they were less positive throughout the day.

Fighting the munchies? You might actually be thirsty! Our body’s mechanism for alerting your brain that you’re hungry or thirsty isn’t the most accurate, so sometimes you can think that you’re hungry when actually needing some H2O instead. Next time you find yourself reaching for a snack, try drinking a large glass of water first. This is also a great way to reduce the amount of calories you’re consuming during the day. Water is a great appetite suppressant, and you can drink as much as you like without having to count calories. To boost your metabolism, an adequate amount of water is needed to keep the bodily functions operating correctly.

Unfortunately, heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Plaque build up is usually what causes your heart to falter, and as the most important organ of the human body, taking good care of it is vital (literally!). Drinking enough water everyday will dramatically decrease the chances of heart disease, and will help your heart to stay healthy. Also, drinking your daily eight glasses of water will help to decrease your blood pressure, taking a lot of stress off of your heart. When you’re fully hydrated, your blood is about 92 percent water, which will help it to move more efficiently through your body and help your heart to beat effortlessly.

Did you know that if you’re not drinking enough water, your body actually creates more cholesterol so that your cells are still functioning properly? If you already are struggling with high cholesterol, this can make it that much harder for your body to reduce your cholesterol levels. Make sure that you’re drinking enough H2O during the day so that you can help your body function correctly without raising your cholesterol.

When you’re consuming enough water throughout the day, then you’ll be able to fight off illnesses and viruses more easily. When your body is struggling to keep itself hydrated, then flushing out the toxins that make you sick can be harder and take more time, giving the bad bacteria a better opportunity to start its assault on your immune system. Stop that office virus or stomach bug in its tracks by drinking enough water every day, and even increasing your daily consumption during cold and flu season.

Staying hydrated helps your body to work efficiently, instead of having to constantly play catch up because it’s dehydrated. If you stay dehydrated for extended periods, your organs have to work harder, which causes them to age faster. When you’re hydrated and giving your body the hydration that it needs, then your body can slow down and maintain its functions comfortably.

At Vida-Flo Breckenridge, we understand that hydration is vital to your body. Our hydration treatments are designed to quickly rehydrate you in as little as 45 minutes, so you always leave feeling incredibly refreshed and revived. We’re proud to offer a clean and relaxing office with certified nurses and a helpful staff to serve you as best as we can. Of course, this is the best way to keep your hydration levels maintained. Try to drink around 64 ounces of water per day. If you find yourself struggling with staying motivated to sip water, try adding in some of your favorite fruits for flavor, such as strawberries or orange. Herbal teas, coconut water, and smoothies are also great ways to get that needed H20 during the day.

Did you know that fruits and vegetables are great alternative ways to hydrate yourself? Vegetables such as cucumbers, lettuce, eggplant, and spinach are over 50 percent water, and fruits like watermelon, strawberries, and oranges are also awesome sources of hydration. Munching on these yummy foods throughout the the day will supplement your water intake, and your body will thank you for the added vitamins and minerals that these foods contain.

Is getting fit one of your 2017 resolutions? Did you ever consider how hydration is just as important as working on your squats and getting that heart rate up? Proper hydration can help your blood pressure to stabilize, boost your metabolism, and increase your energy levels. Vida-Flo Breckenridge is passionate about keeping your body in top shape with our IV hydration and vitamin therapies. If you’re feeling like you need to kickstart your hydration goals, make an appointment with us today! In the meantime, here are some great hydration tips to follow after a workout.

Water is the ultimate hydrator and is the best for recovery after a hard workout. Try to drink about 24 ounces of water right after you leave the gym. To ensure that you won’t shock your body, try to drink cool or room-temperature water instead of water with ice in it. After you’ve consumed 24 ounces, continue to sip water throughout the day or evening to keep your hydration levels maintained. Sipping water is much better than chugging several ounces at a time. You’ll retain water and feel bloated if you try to consume a lot of H2O in those important few hours after your workout. If you’ve had a particularly strenuous gym session or gone for a run outside in hot temperatures, drinking plenty of water is imperative as it is quite easy to become dehydrated after intense sweat and electrolyte loss.

If you’re concerned about the lost of sodium and electrolytes after an energetic workout class or a bootcamp session outside during the summer, you can supplement your water intake with coconut or water with added electrolytes. After you’ve been sweating for awhile, your body loses a lot of its nutrients and it can be hard to replace them. Acute dehydration can make you feel ill, contribute to muscle cramps, and raise your heart rate. Coconut water has naturally-occurring electrolytes and contains more potassium than a banana, making it an excellent choice for replacing those lost vitamins and minerals. Make sure that the coconut water that you choose doesn’t contain any added sugar or artificial flavors, as sugar can dehydrate you further. Water with added electrolytes is another great option if you don’t prefer coconut water or can’t find it in your city or town. While many people think that sports drinks are a good option for replacing the electrolytes lost while working out, often those beverages contain lots of sugar, artificial dyes, and artificial flavors.

Ever considered fruit as a rehydration option? Fruit has lots of water, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are a perfect choice after an intense workout. Try watermelon, apples, honeydew, cantaloupe, and grapes to help you rehydrate. If you want to add some protein or vegetables, blend your favorite combinations into a yummy post-gym smoothie. While fruit is a great recovery option, make sure to continue sipping water, coconut water, or electrolyte water along with consuming your favorite fruits. There is water in fruit, but not quite enough to replenish your body if an apple is your only hydration option.

We get it: working on your fitness can make you tired. But stopping by a drive-thru to grab a cappuccino on the way home isn’t the best idea, especially after a workout. Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning that it causes your body to lose water. If you’re already dehydrated, drinking a cup of joe won’t exactly make you feel better after hitting the gym. Also, don’t get derailed by trying decaf coffee. Even though the caffeine is removed, the diuretic properties still remain. Coffee is delicious but not the best choice after a fitness class or gym session. Save that delicious iced latte for the next day after you’ve properly rehydrated.

A little tired of plain old H2O? Try sipping some warm chicken, vegetable, or beef broth. Bone and veggie broths are chock full of nutrients, vitamins, and protein, making broth a great choice for rehydrating after a sweat-filled gym session. On top of being a delicious and savory post-workout treat, broth contains collagen, minerals, and glucosamine, which are great for recovering after a long run. Bone and veggie broth also boosts your immune system and provides excellent protein. Try sipping a steaming cup instead of drinking eight ounces of H2O.

Understanding and diagnosing dehydration is extremely important to your overall fitness success so you don’t overexert your body. One of the first signs of dehydration is thirst. Easy to ignore, being thirsty while at the gym is your first sign of needing to drink some water. Other early indicators of dehydration is heightened blood pressure and heart rate, increased perspiration, and flushed skin. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break and drink eight ounces of water. Stopping exertion before these symptoms intensify is imperative to ensuring that you won’t injure yourself or faint.

At Vida-Flo Breckenridge, we’re passionate about providing quick and beneficial hydration therapies to help your get back to your life quickly. Are you searching for that rested, awake look this winter season? Is your skin dull, lifeless, and dry? Hydration is one of the most important skin care practices that will help you to look awake and well-rested. Drinking enough water is the absolute best way to ensure that your skin looks its best. Vida-Flo Nashville is America’s IV Hydration expert and can give you some great IV Hydration options so you’ll look perfect for that special night out, important event, or even just every day. Here are some quick and easy ways to keep your skin hydrated.

Drinking plenty of water is the absolute best way to keep your skin supple and glowing. Most experts recommend eight to ten glasses per day. So you’re not running to refill your glass often, get a large water bottle or cup and keep it by your desk. You can also set an alarm on your phone or computer to remind you to take a few sips throughout the day. Water is extremely important to your overall health, energy levels, and skin clarity. Caffeinated teas, juices, and sodas need to be limited as well since they contain copious amounts of sugar and caffeine which will dehydrate your body and make you more tired. As you become more accustomed to drinking plenty of water throughout the day, you’ll notice that your skin will appear clearer and brighter.

Did you know that fruits and vegetables contain lots of water? One apple can contain upwards of 85 percent of water along with fiber, nutrients, and vitamins. If you want to consume lots of fruits and veggies quickly and don’t have a lot of time, try blending them into a smoothie. Make sure to leave out any sugary juices or sweeteners so that you’re getting the most out of that yummy blend. A salad filled with leafy greens is another great choice for lunch as lettuces are full of water as well. Along with being full of water, eating more vegetables and fruits will make you feel healthier and give you energy, and the added benefits of the vitamins and nutrients will make your skin even more glowy.

The newest trend in health and hydration, bone broth is a treasure trove of protein, minerals, and anti-inflammatory properties. Along with the delicious goodness that chicken, vegetable, or beef broth offers, your body is able to easily digest and utilize the minerals and nutrition that broth has. It also is a supplemental way to hydrate, especially if you have been sick or ill and in need of some nutrition. You can use whatever broth you prefer as a base for soups or just sip it hot throughout the day. Along with the nutrients, vitamins, protein, and minerals, the hydration of broth will be incredibly beneficial to your skin health.

If you’re in need of flavor but still want to hit your hydration goals, coconut water is an excellent option. Full of potassium, vitamin C, and electrolytes, this is a perfect choice if you’re fighting off a cold or have recently worked out and need more than plain H2O. Make sure that the coconut water you choose doesn’t have any added sugar or artificial flavorings. One of the best hydrators, coconut water will make your skin bright and luminous.

Over the past few years, Crossfit Competition has become extremely popular among workout gurus and personal trainers alike. With its constantly varied, high-intensity movements, CrossFit is a challenging training program that builds strength and conditioning outside of commercial gyms. The CrossFit games season spans from the end of February through July, with athletes jumping on these opportunities to show off their impressive strength and endurance. At Vida-Flo in Chattanooga, we’ve helped hundreds of athletes prepare and recover from CrossFit competitions through our state-of-the-art IV treatments. Whether you’re ramping up for your first CrossFit competition or your tenth, there are a variety of things you can do to gain a competitive advantage.

1. Have Fun

Perhaps the most important tip in this article — make sure to have fun! During your first five to ten CrossFit competitions, try not to worry too much about your performance or how you’re going to look on the competition floor. If you’re attending your first CrossFit competition, make a mental note that your participation will simply be a learning experience in and of itself. Soak up the sights and sounds of other, more seasoned, athletes and make note of their successes in performance.

2. Wake Up Early & Eat A Good Breakfast

Most CrossFit competitions start early in the morning, so it’s important to ensure you have the necessary fuel to power through the day long competition. We recommend waking up at least three hours before your competition, so you have ample time to eat a hearty breakfast and wake up your body. If you wind up waking up an hour before the competition, you run the risk of becoming fatigued more quickly and your ability to recover between sets will be greatly reduced. If you’re looking for an added boost in energy and physical performance, visit our IV hydration clinic in Chattanooga. We offer a variety of IV treatments specifically designed to restore fluids and vitamins in your body!

3. Be Safe

Everyone wants to be able to put in 150% on competition day, even at the expense of their own body. While you may feel inclined to bump up your weights the day of the CrossFit competition, it’s important to pick weights and reps that you know your body can handle. If your clean personal record (PR) is 150lbs, don’t up your weights to 200lb the day of the competition because you’re feeling overly confident. This can easily lead to injury, so you should always opt for a weight you’re comfortable with.

4. Recover Safely

Recovering safely after a workout is just as important as training. While many CrossFit athletes rely on proper nutrition, deep tissue work and ice baths to reset their engines, many forget the most important part of recovery — sleep! Sleep is a critical component to your CrossFit competition success not only for alertness, but so your body can properly promote tissue repair and muscle growth. If you’re looking to add a little more clarity to your mental and physical physique, stop by Vida-Flo in Nashville for one of our hydration therapy treatments. Our Alert: Oxygen IV therapy treatment uses pure oxygen to heighten concentration and alertness while stabilizing the nervous system. If you want to increase your aerobic stamina before your big CrossFit competition, this is an easy way to do so!

5. Embrace Pre-Competition Butterflies

If you get antsy and nervous thinking about your upcoming CrossFit competition, embrace the butterflies! Competition is stressful, and as humans we biologically need to prepare ourselves to handle stress. The human stress response begins in the brain and eventually recruits the adrenals to release cortisol and adrenaline throughout your body. This is actually your body’s way of mobilizing energy and providing your muscles with the sugar, fats and proteins needed to perform your best! So when you feel those little butterflies start to take flight in your stomach the day of the competition, take a deep breath and let them fly.

6. Start Training Early

Training for a CrossFit competition can be extremely demanding and you should start training approximately twelve to sixteen weeks before the actual competition. In the beginning stages of your training, we recommend taking a good, honest look at where your strengths and weaknesses lie. If you struggle with self-evaluation, ask a workout buddy or coach to assess your strength and conditioning levels. This will give you pertinent information about where you should be focusing your training and where you can back off.

7. Train With People Who Are Better Than You

Whether you’re just beginning your CrossFit journey or you’ve been CrossFitting for years, training with athletes who are stronger and more skilled than you will push you to be as good as them. While normal CrossFit classes are typically held in a group setting, you likely won’t be challenged by the novice Crossfitter in your group. If you’re serious about training for your CrossFit competition, take a look at your class and start training with people you know will push you to your peak physical limits.

8. Taper Your Workout

As you get closer and closer to the date of your CrossFit competition, you’ll need to slowly start tapering your training regimen to prepare for the big day. As you slowly start to lower the intensity and load of your workout, your nervous system will adapt and start to recover. Tapering your workout also gives you the opportunity to lower your weight and decrease your reps so you can put more focus on your technique. Most CrossFit competitors will taper their workout anywhere from five days out to three weeks out depending on the duration of the competition.

9. Eat Normal Meals The Day Before

While you may be tempted to fill your body with large amounts of carbohydrates before the CrossFit competition, don’t! Unlike marathons, there’s no need to carb-load the day before your big competition. Stuffing yourself with carbs will only flood your bloodstream with sugar, which can cause your insulin to spike and leave you feeling bloated and heavy due to water retention. Instead of forcing your body to store that excess sugar as fat, eat a normal diet before your Crossfit competition.

10. Consider IV Hydration Therapy

If you’re serious about preparing your body for a CrossFit competition, stop by Vida-Flo in Nashville for IV hydration therapy. We’ve helped hundreds of CrossFitters prepare for competitions so they can perform at their absolute peak. When you visit our hydration therapy treatment center, our accredited medical professionals will recommend the best hydration treatment solution for you and your fitness goals. Don’t settle for sugary sports drinks and oral supplements to get the fuel you need for your CrossFit competition. Stop by Vida-Flo in Nashville today!

If you plan on running in any of Nashville’s marathons or half marathons in 2017, it’s important to make sure your hydration is a priority. When it comes to running, making sure your body is properly hydrated can play a critical role in your performance. At Vida-Flo in Nashville, we offer therapy for athletes and runners looking to return their body to its peak condition before or after their athletic competition. Whether you plan on stopping by our state-of-the-art clinic before or after your marathon, hydration can do wonders for your physical performance, and in this article, we’ll discuss why.

Why Hydration Is So Important To Runners

If you love spending hours on the gym treadmill, or find peace in a long afternoon run, it’s important to keep your body well hydrated. Water acts as a coolant for your body during physical exercise, so maintaining proper hydration is not only critical to your athletic performance, it’s also very critical to your health. Since our bodies are mainly comprised of water, the tiniest shift in your body’s fluids can lead to drastic changes in your running performance. When we sweat, it’s our body’s way of trying to cool us down from overheating during intense physical activity. When we lose a good amount of our body’s water through sweating, it can lead to symptoms of dehydration, including:

  • Fatigue and dry mouth
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chills and cramps
  • A drop in blood volume

What You Should Drink When You’re Dehydrated

Did you know that when you sweat, you not only lose water, but also electrolytes? This means that just drinking water won’t provide your body with the proper hydration it needs to prepare and recover from a strenuous workout. A great way to combat the negative effects of dehydration is to schedule a treatment with Vida-Flo in Nashville. Our Vida-Flo Hydration Restoration Fluids are a 1,000mL electrolyte replenishment solution that can help your body quickly and efficiently restore itself to a healthy and hydrated state.

How To Prevent Dehydration

One of the easiest ways to prevent dehydration is by visiting our hydration therapy clinic in Nashville. Hydration therapy offers a variety of benefits for both the competitive and recreational runner looking to increase the length of their run and overall fitness productivity. At Vida-Flo, we work with devoted marathon runners, MMA fighters and even yogis to ensure they’re optimally hydrated before and after their event or competition. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of hydration therapy and how it can help you prepare for your full or half marathon, contact our board-certified physicians today!

For many novice and experienced runners, proper hydration can mean the difference between a great run and a not-so-great run. Instead of fighting off dehydration with sugary sports drinks and fountain water, consider joining us at Vida-Flo for a specialized treatment. Our Nashville hydration experts will take the time to learn about your hydration goals before recommending the best treatment solution for you.

Dehydration occurs when the body isn’t receiving enough water to compensate for its daily output. Severe dehydration, while rare, can be life threatening, but even mild dehydration can have adverse effects on mood and energy levels. It’s important to notice and treat dehydration as early as possible. At Vida-Flo Breckenridge, treating dehydration is our specialty and we’re passionate about taking care of your body from the inside out.

Dehydration symptoms usually include headache, lethargy, muscle cramps, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, and heart palpitations (the feeling that your heart is jumping or pounding). You can also experience cravings for sweets, dry skin, fever and chills, and irritability and confusion. Since the body is made up of two-thirds water, dehydration should be treated with aggression and quick response. Stopping physical exertion is also extremely important because continuing to tax your body can continue the spiral towards further dehydration.

The first action that you should take is to drink water. Sports drinks with added electrolytes, clear fruit juices, electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte™, and coconut water are also great liquids to consume to help alleviate dehydration. You can also eat foods with high water content such as celery, apples, iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, and watermelon. Here at Vida-Flo, our IV treatments rehydrate the body rapidly with the equivalent of two and a half liters of water in a short amount of time. If you’re suffering from dehydration, you can be sure that you’ll leave Vida-Flo feeling better from the inside out.

As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and this is definitely the case. It’s imperative to drink one to three liters of water per day to ensure that your body is properly hydrated. Make sure to rehydrate before and after physical activity, and also monitor your water intake in hot and dry weather. If you’re still struggling to consume the adequate amount of water, come to Vida-Flo Breckenridge. We know you’re busy and sometimes need a quick solution to alleviate dehydration symptoms.

In as little as 45 minutes, Vida-Flo Breckenridge will refresh your body with a large amount of fluids, vitamins, and even medications to help you to get back to 100 percent in no time. We have a clean, calm, and relaxing facility and an excellent staff dedicated to you and your overall health. Come see us today!
